This was one of the more surprising hits of recent months. Based on a true story, Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson play a couple who in the 1990s formed a Neil Diamond tribute band called Thunder and Lightning which gained great success in their home state of Milwaukee.

We see their beginnings and how their act and their relationship develops, and the film is not afraid to mix comedy with tragedy. Both Jackman and Hudson are excellent in the starring roles, and it helps that they both have terrific singing voices and great stage presence. Indeed, Hudson has been nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA for her performance.

The Guardian gave it a four star review, with Peter Bradshaw writing: “Here is a startlingly strange, undeniably entertaining true-life story from the heartland of American showbusiness; a lovable crowdpleaser whose feelgood flavour won’t prepare you for the way the plot repeatedly and savagely twists like an unsafe fairground ride.”
