SENTIMENTAL VALUE
Writer and director Joachim Trier was rightly lauded for his highly acclaimed The Worst Person in the World in 2021, and he has followed this up with Sentimental Value - a brilliant, comedic and occasionally searing insight into a dysfunctional family.
With dialogue in Norwegian, Swedish and English, the film focuses on a famous film director (Gustav Borg) played by Stelllan Skarsgård, and his relationship with his actress daughter Nora who is superbly portrayed by Renate Reinsve. Whilst Sentimental Value is primarily about familial relationships and tensions, it is also about the life affirming power of art.
Sentimental Value gained an array of excellent reviews, including this from RogerEbert.com: “History, memory, expression, art, trauma—they’re all woven through Trier’s breathtaking drama, a movie that recalls Ingmar Bergman more than any he’s made yet but also one that truly cements his status as one of the working masters. It’s a movie that sneaks up on you like great fiction, blending theme and character in a way that allows it to live in your mind after you see it, rolling around what it means to both the people in it and your own life.”
Sentimental Value is 2 hours 13 minute long (plus a 20 minute interval).
