I SWEAR
I Swear is an interesting, moving and also hugely entertaining film about a young man growing up with Tourette's syndrome, set in Scotland and based on the real life story of John Davidson. John is winningly played by Scott Ellis Watson as a schoolboy and then Robert Aramayo as a teenager and young man, as he comes to terms with his condition and eventually becomes an advocate and spokesperson for Tourette’s. Aramayo won an award for Best Lead Performance at the British Independent Film Awards in 2025.
The film depicts John’s many challenges and doesn't shy away from the awkward, difficult and sometimes dangerous situations John finds himself in, but there are also moments of great humour. Some high quality supporting actors offer depth and weight to the film, notably Maxine Peake, Stephen Mullen and Shirley Henderson. I Swear was written and directed by the veteran filmmaker Kirk Jones.
In The Guardian, Peter Bradshaw described it as “an absorbing, compassionate film”, writing, “I Swear contains a great performance from Robert Aramayo, full of intelligence and charm, and it raises relevant questions about the overdiagnosis debate surrounding conditions such as ADHD and autism, as well as the larger tonal point of how, when and whether to laugh at John or with him.”
Please note: I Swear does contain some distressing scenes of violence. And as the title suggests, there is also a lot of swearing!
