The Father is an astonishing film with a superb cast. It is about ageing and dementia, but told through a variety of prisms and perspectives which reflect the fractured and confusing nature of dementia itself.

Anthony Hopkins won the 2021 best actor Oscar for the starring role but Olivia Coleman is equally excellent as his daughter who is torn in how she deals with his deteriorating condition. It is directed by Florian Zeller, and adapted by Christopher Hampton from Zeller’s own award-winning stage play - and its theatre origins are perhaps reflected in its narrow but nuanced focus.

The Father gathered numerous five star reviews, including this one in Empire magazine: “Hopkins is extraordinary as a man flailing against a condition that’s taking everything from him. And Zeller proves he’s a natural filmmaker, orchestrating a Wagnerian opera of emotion based entirely around an old man in a flat.”
